Barack Obama is more than happy that the current discussion is about Same-Sex Marriage. Sure, it hurts him with people whose votes he wasn't going to get anyway, but it doesn't hurt him much with his base. On the other hand, it has served as a great "SQUIRREL!" for the Country At Large.
And so, in honor of President Shiny-Object, I tell you: Stay On Target.
